Dr Edward Howell is the Strategic Net Assessment Research Fellow with SST:CCW. His research concerns the politics, international relations, and security of the Korean Peninsula and East Asia, with particular interests in inter-Korean and DPRK-US relations, and the UK's relations with the Northeast Asia. His latest monograph, North Korea and the Global Nuclear Order: When Bad Behaviour Pays, was published by Oxford University Press in 2023, and his forthcoming monograph, A New Axis of Upheaval: North Korea, Russia, and China—and Why We Should Care is expected for publication in 2026. Dr Howell frequently offers analysis for national and international media, including The Spectator and BBC News; for national and international governments; and regularly offers talks on the security and foreign policy of the Korean Peninsula and the Indo-Pacific.
Dr Howell offers undergraduate teaching in all Final Honour School papers in International Relations, namely International Relations; International Relations in the era of the Cold War; International Relations in the era of Two World Wars; and the Special Subject in Politics: International Security and Conflict. He also teaches the Politics in China paper and the Introduction to the Practice of Politics (First Public Examination). Dr Howell has provided graduate supervision for theses pertaining to the historical and contemporary international relations and security of East Asia (including the Korean Peninsula), Sino-US strategic competition, and convened the graduate (M.Phil.) paper on the International Relations of East Asia. He is also the Korea Foundation Fellow at The Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House), London.
