Job Opportunity: Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Changing Character of Conflict Platform

The Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work on an exciting new project directed by Dr Annette Idler in collaboration with Dr Robert Johnson and Professor Peter Wilson, and supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).

The project “The Changing Character of Conflict Platform: Understanding, Tracing and Forecasting Change across Time, Space and Cultures” aims to produce a comprehensive knowledge platform on how and when armed conflict changes, with a view to enabling governments and international organisations to adapt their strategies and policies to address ongoing and prevent future conflict (see http://conflictplatform.ox.ac.uk for more information).

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake quantitative research both independently and jointly with the Project Director and the project team, and in addition s/he will be expected to participate fully in the research life of the Department and the Changing Character of War  Centre (CCW). The postholder’s duties will include statistical analysis, model development, and the creation of interactive data visualisations, and engage with qualitative research approaches from across the Social Sciences, Arts, and Humanities. Applicants should therefore have advanced skills in research design and quantitative analysis, with excellent skills in web technologies such as JavaScript and html, and curiosity for novel interdisciplinary approaches, particularly in the Arts and Humanities. They should have demonstrable ability to use advanced data analysis software. The successful candidate will hold a doctorate in Statistics, Economics and/or Political Science, or be close to completion of a PhD in a relevant subject.

Experience in engaging with external stakeholders, including governments, international organisations and think tanks, is highly desirable. The duties of the Postdoctoral Research Fellow will also include assisting the Project Director and the research team in the academic and practical organisation of two a conferences on the Changing Character of Conflict Platform, to be held in Oxford in September 2018 and September 2020.
